DEXA Bone Densitometry Scan

DEXA stands for Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry. It is a useful technique because as a scan it is a low dose X-ray procedure which can measure the mineral density of your bones. Specifically, it looks at the bone mineral density or BMD, and compares your reading with a database of normal values to see if you are at a higher risk of having a fracture due to reduced strength in your bones. A low bone mineral density means that the bone is weaker than it should be.
The test will be reported back to your referring consultant or GP for them to discuss the finding with you.
